The Waterford/South East Careers Expo hosted by Waterford Chamber at the Tower Hotel was inundated with over 1,400 job seekers on Friday 21st October last. Also in attendance were the Argentinian Ambassador, Cllr Pat Hayes The Mayor of Waterford and Minister Sean Sherlock TD (Minister for Research & Innovation).

Commenting on the successful event, Anne Marie Caulfield, President of Waterford Chamber said, “We are delighted with the number of candidates that turned up to the Expo, the companies who participated were also delighted and managed to identify a number of suitable candidates for the positions on offer. We are hopeful that a number of people who attended will have found jobs, which is what it is all about.
Feedback from a number of companies at the Expo identified the importance of job seekers up skilling and re-skilling themselves to make them more attractive to potential employers. Waterford Chamber Skillnets has a number of programs on offer which are free to Job Seekers under the Job Seekers Support Program and these courses are aimed at re-skilling job seekers for today’s job market. Referring to the Goodbody Economic Consultants report which identified that up to €96m could be brought into the South East annually if the region were to achieve university designation Ms Caulfield asked that the Minister bring back the message that this must be delivered as expeditiously as possible.
Concluding Ms Caulfield said, "there is no doubt that the demand is there for a Careers Expo aimed at Waterford and the South East and we will host another of these Expo’s in the New Year with the aim of increasing the number of participating companies with hopefully even more jobs on offer.”
Congratulating Waterford Chamber on the event Minister Sean Sherlock stated that “the unemployment crises in the South East is being taken seriously by Government and that Government is working with state agency stakeholders to create a plan. Minister Sherlock also acknowledged that eh clearly heard the message regarding the importance of a Technological University for the region saying that he would take this message back to Minister Bruton, Minister Howlin and Minister Hogan.
The Careers Expo for Waterford and the South East featured a broad range of fantastic companies including Genzyme Ireland, Glanbia, KPMG, Statestreet, Sunlife Financial, Schivo Group, Dawn Meats, Datapac and many more with a combined total of in excess of 200 jobs on offer.
