Chamber Welcomes Council’s Focus on City Centre Revitalisation PDF Print E-mail

Waterford Chamber President Colin McGookin has welcomed the City Council’s announcement of its plans to conduct a City Centre Revitalisation Study.

According to a letter sent to city centre businesses and residents by Paddy Power, Director of Services at City Council, the purpose of the study is to “compile an up to date knowledge base of the City Centre’s current functions, operations and attractiveness.”

Mr McGookin commented, “The revitalisation of the city centre is a top priority of the Chamber and so we are very supportive of this initiative and we encourage all businesses to assist in compiling the data needed for the study.”

The study will entail a “revitalisation questionnaire” of all city centre businesses, owner-occupiers and residents carried out by a number of Waterford City Council summer students over a 12 week period commencing in June 2008. The questionnaire is “designed to ascertain the levels of vitality, vibrancy and function in the area in order to create an environment that may encourage future city centre development and investment.”

Anne Marie Caulfield, Chair of the Chamber’s Retail Committee added, “This Revitalisation Study is just the first step in a series of initiatives to revitalise the city centre. The Chamber will also seek to input into the City Council Regional Retail Strategy through an open forum discussion with members and by directly liaising with City Council.“

The Chamber will continue to work with the City Council to unlock the potential of our city centre and to enhance its aesthetic for all shoppers, businesses and residents alike,” concluded Ms Caulfield.
