Waterford Chamber President Andrew O’Neill was joined by Mayor Mary O’Halloran and newly appointed City Manager Michael Walsh in hosting a reception for Waterfordians presently working and living in Dublin. “The Chamber have made this group of proud Waterfordians our “Honorary Ambassadors” and we meet with them regularly to update them on the issues of the day in Waterford and equip them to argue the Waterford case for example in the case of designation of WIT to University status which is the priority issue for Waterford and the South East Region. In turn we ask our “Honorary Ambassadors” to fly the flag proudly for Waterford and to pass on any potential opportunities for Waterford,” commented Andrew O’Neill.
Waterford’s first citizen Mayor Mary O’Halloran addressed the gathering which included Nicky Fewer and Anna Manahan, both Freemen of Waterford “This is a great time of the year to look to the future. And never before has the future for our great city looked so bright. Waterford is on the crest of a brand new wave. And it is a wave which will lift all boats. Many of you in this room may not have visited your native Waterford in some time. I would tonight encourage you to do so. There you will see a thriving, modern city. As you will have seen from our presentation of Project 2014 and in particular Waterford Viking Triangle, many exciting new developments are underway and more are in the pipeline. We look forward with great hope that 2008 will see Waterford Institute of Technology finally given the recognition it deserves by being designated University status,” concluded Mayor O’Halloran.
Monica Leech, CEO who also attended said “We have over one hundred and fifty “Honorary Ambassadors” at present and the database keeps on growing. The objective of this initiative which is headed up by Chamber Director Bobby O’Keeffe is to harness the collective power and potential of Waterford people not only working in the Dublin but right across the globe.” At the event Chamber promoted its latest communication tool Businessvillage.ie, an online community of Waterford Chamber which will allow the Honorary Ambassador initiative to be rolled out globally.
President Andrew O’Neill said he was very happy with the success of the event and the Chamber intend to host the next gathering of the “Honorary Ambassadors” in Spring 2008 at Mulligans Pub in Sandymount.
