Cosc, the National Office for the Prevention of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence, is an executive office of the Department of Justice, Equality & Law Reform. Cosc is hosting a conference ‘Stopping Domestic Violence: What Works?’ in Waterford from May 29th-30th 2008. In conjunction with this conference Cosc organised an art competition for undergraduate art students in the Republic of Ireland.
We know that, sadly, Domestic Violence is a feature of Irish family life. We know that it is under-reported, victims often feel stigma and shame and many lack confidence in the system. It is vital therefore that those experiencing Domestic Violence are assured that they will experience sanctuary, and that society will protect and support them to recover from their ordeal. It is for this reason Cosc chose the theme of ‘Sanctuary’ for the competition.
From the competition entries 24 pieces were selected for exhibition, with 4 artists winning prizes for their work.
1st Prize Winner: Jason Dunne , National College of Art and Design
2nd Prize Winner: Siobhan Conway, National College of Art and Design
3rd Prize winner: Jamie Murphy , Waterford Institute of Technology
Highly Recommended: Josephine Geaney, Limerick Institute of Technology
